  • 1953 General Motors Firebird 1 XP-21

  • The General Motors Firebird 1 XP-21 was, basically, a jet airplane with automobile wheels. The car was inspired (as was the commercial version of the Firebird) by designs on a jet engine airplane. However, the XP-21 was just more advanced in terms of copying the airplane.
  • The XP-21 was designed in 1953. Only one of these concept cars was ever made, as it was wildly impractical to make more than one. The car had a bubble canopy over an actual cockpit. The fuselage was made of fiberglass, and the vehicle had a vertical tail fin and short wings. It was powered by a Whirlfire gas turbine engine.
